Top Ten - The Late Shows for craft lovers!

May 8, 2017

The Late Shows are fast becoming a highlight of the cultural calendar here in the North East and it's not hard to see why.  Tons of interesting and diverse venues opening their doors late at night to give us the chance for something a little different.  Needless to say, we are crazy excited to host a craft drop-in with an 80's vibe on Saturday 20th May (details below number 1).

With so many local venues and creatives getting involved, it could be hard to plan where to go.  Well, we've poured over the schedule and here are our top ten picks for you crafty folk.

1.  Gateshead Central Library - 80's Culture Club - Prince Consort Road, Gateshead, NE8 4LN.  Sat Only  Open 6-11pm

Team Crafthood will be donning our best leg warmers and deely boppers and raving our way through our 80's themed craft drop-in session.

We have sourced some amazing materials for our craft (think Neons, abstracts and just in your face 80's and you're there!)  You'll be able to complete the make in about ten minutes. Your creation is then yours to keep and wear.

Also at the event there’ll be taster digital arts and traditional arts workshops with a retro theme, 80s music, day glow decorations and retro games.  Come by say 'Hi' and get your craft on.

2.  System Gallery - 2nd Floor, 22 Leazes Park Road, Newcastle, NE1 4PG.  Sat only  7pm - 11pm

System is a not for profit arts organisation and their event coincides with their latest exhibition 'Framing the Crisis' which explores the recent media coverage of human migration.  At the event you can mark your own geographic history on their giant world map.  The Crafthood love all things to do with paper and at this event you can also get involved in making your own origami crane.  A bang on trend craft that we've seen used to amazing effect - even to create necklaces!

3.  Incubate Experimental Printmaking - 1st Floor, Commercial Union House, 39 Pilgrim Street, Newcastle, NE1 6QE

Sat only 7pm - 11pm

This event caught our eye as this experimental workshop is opening it's doors to the public for the very first time this Late Shows.

Artist and Printmaker Nick Christie will be giving a demo using heat sensitive ink and visitors are able to have a go and print an artwork to take home.  Gotta love a make and take!

4.  David Fry Pottery Studio -

Black Swan Courtyard, 69 Westgate Road, Newcastle, NE1 1SG.

Sat Only  Open: 7-11pm

If you're missing The Great Pottery Throwdown as much as we are then head on over to this pottery studio.  You'll get a chance to throw your own pot either on the wheel or by hand.  Having previously had a go at throwing a pot I can confirm it is far harder than the experts make it look and 'abstract' makes are pretty standard for beginners.  If you have a go and like the look of what you've made you can choose to have your creation glazed and fired at the studio.  Too exciting!

5.   Shipley Art Gallery - Prince Consort Road, Gateshead, NE8 4JB.  Sat Only  Open: 6-11pm

The Shipley always put on a good show and this night looks set to be no exception. It's the Art Gallery's centenary year and they're theming their event around the 1920's so expect some glamorous, roaring, decadent fun.

They're offering music, cocktails, canapés and craft (what's not to love?) and the chance to buy a preloved outfit at the vintage clothes stall.  Check out their new Creator Space to test out your craft skills.  If we get the chance we'll be nipping along from Gateshead Library to have a spy....and maybe a cocktail!

6.  Bensham Grove - Sidney Grove, Gateshead, NE8 2XD.  LXLMSSat Only  Open: 6-11pm

This place is one for all craft lovers.  It's a Grade II listed building and also a Centre of Excellence for Creative Craft. Sounds like a perfect spot for craft lovers.

Tours of the building will be taking place, along with the chance to try your hand at glass works, ceramics, textiles and paper craft.  These are make and take workshops so yet more craft loveliness to fill your homes!

7.  Tyne Bank Brewery - 375  Walker Road, Newcastle, NE6 2AB.  Sat Only  Open: 7pm until late

Just look at this cool space that is offering up a 20-meter-long, wall of paper and colouring pencils suspended from the ceiling.  How good?!

Along with this the brewery has an amazing sounding core menu of brews along with seasonal specials.  This sounds like a good place to head to last when the beer and creative juices are flowing.  We imagine the artwork will get more interesting the later the night becomes.

8.  Northern Print -  Stepney Bank, Newcastle, NE1 2NP.  Fri and Sat  Open: 7-11pm

As soon as we heard that you could try your hand on Northern Prints Letterpress we knew we wanted to go along to this event.  We've been slightly obsessed by typography and letterpresses for some time but opportunities to use them are quite rare so we expect this to be a popular event.

There'll be artists there giving demos and an opportunity to also try drypoint print.  We've participated in workshops at this venue before and they have been well worth a trip down the bank.

9.  Newcastle City Library - Charles Avison Building, 33 New Bridge Street West, Newcastle, NE1 8AX.  Sat Only  Open: 7-11pm

Two words - Flash Mob!! Now this is not strictly craft related BUT there is also the chance to create your own glass art work...potentially whilst watching a flash mob in the library.  Honestly, these events sound so so good. Top marks to the organisers; it's not everyday that you'd get the opportunity to craft in a library whilst trying to anticipate when a flash mob would appear.

There is also the chance to listen to a talk by Chris Phipps on the story of pop's craziest dances!  It sounds like a good night to hit the library but maybe we need to brush up on our dance routines first...we've found this useful dance guide to help!

10.  Gallagher & Turner - 30 St Mary’s Place, Newcastle, NE1 7PQ.  Sat Only  Open 7-11pm

Our last pick is for those who have always wanted to try their hand at life drawing but never got round to it. This drop in session is to be led by artist and tutor Dale Atkinson. All materials are provided and you can even have a glass of wine.

We've tried life drawing before, if you're up for a creative challenge then we'd say this is The Late Show event for you.

We'd love to hear what your Late Show plans are and we'd really really love to see you there.

Happy crafting folks.
